Luangwa River, Zambia. Hippos are numerous in African rivers. These were seen from the banks of the Luangwa river, together with elephants and crocodiles. I seem to gravitate towards the big animals a lot of the time as they are so exciting to paint. I love painting hippos in water due to the wet sky reflections and textures on the skin. This group were just on a small piece of dry sand below the river bank, bathed with warm sunlight. The oxpeckers (small birds) always add interest and can often be seen taking tics and insects from the bodies of many game, including giraffe and buffalo.
