Callaghans of Shrewsbury are delighted to introduce our collection of paintings by Geoffrey Key, an internationally renowned painter and sculpture whose works are characterised by bold use of colour and line, as well as a vibrant, dreamlike and somewhat humorous quality which offers a snapshot into his vivid imagination. Paintings by Geoffrey Key are imbued with character and joy – as Key himself stated, “I love life. I love the joys of being alive. I try to paint happy pictures.”
Geoffrey Key’s passion for art began very early in life, encouraged by his mother who was herself an illustrator. Since then his works have received a number of accolades such as the Heywood medal in Fine Art and the Guthrie Bond Travelling Scholarship. He has held exhibitions throughout the UK and worldwide, from Dublin to Hong Kong to Australia, and now his works are available to come and see at Callaghans of Shrewsbury.
“His work reminds me of why I love Northern British contemporary art. I am fascinated and in awe of artists like Theodore Major, Brian ‘Braaq’ Shields, and of course Geoffrey Key. I love the character, the bold blocks of colour and the ‘no nonsense’, often humorous aspects of his work. His work is ‘cartoon-esque’ and instantly recognisable. My favourite piece in our collection is ‘River’. Deep bold colours, cartoon clouds and a shimmering river, an outwardly simple yet deeply complex work. I love the fact that Key sees no point in embellishing the work with locations or names. It’s just ‘River’!”–Rob, Gallery Technician.
“When standing in front of a painting by Key, one cannot help but feel happy. His works are pleasingly simple, yet they all contain a theatricality and joy that is characteristic to Geoffrey Key’s style. My favourite painting in our collection is ‘Rhythm’—I love the bold, blocky style and the way this adds to the ‘life’ and expression of the figures rather than detracting from it. I can almost feel the music the people in the painting are playing!” –Erin, Gallery Assistant.
