A new collection of works by Thomas Bossard has come to the gallery! Callaghans is delighted to announce this exhibition by the world-renowned painter, featuring a number of scenes painted in oil on canvas.

Thomas Bossard’s easy-going and humorous nature is present in his works—bumbling, somewhat caricaturistic figures go about their lives in snapshots depicted with wit, charm and a gentle appreciation for the human condition. Bossard’s works are alive with character and infused with humour and optimism, with a soft, cartoon-esque style. They primarily feature depictions of people in ordinary yet theatricalised scenarios, portrayed in Bossard’s distinctive comedic style with elongated noses, little eyes, indistinct mouths and often plump figures.

As said by Frédéric-Charles Baitinger, “Like a child brilliantly spoofing adult life, Thomas Bossard is not only a talented painter but also a great humourist…. Whatever the subject or character be, Thomas Bossard always succeeds to make us feel, with great intensity, the humanity exuding from a clumsy gesture, an improper behaviour or a certain cheekiness.” One cannot help but smile at the gentle comedy and greatly human spirit in Bossard’s paintings.

Thomas Bossard was born in 1971 in Poitiers, France, to a large and creative family. Both his mother and his teachers encouraged his passion for art, and he studied art at Saint Luc School, Belgium. However, upon graduation Bossard wished to experience the world through different careers and settings so plunged himself into various creative fields: he had worked in publicity, illustration, production of porcelain, animation and film, until settling at Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse where he became a scenographer.
His career at the opera house inspired the subject matter of his paintings: friends, colleagues and acquaintances were carried forth as characters in his paintings.
For Bossard, always exercising his imagination at every occupation he held was key.

Since 2005, Thomas Bossard has directed his focus primarily toward painting, participating in various cultural events and exhibiting his works in several galleries across Europe. He exhibits in Paris, Toulouse, and throughout France. In the UK, he has held exhibits in London, NEC Birmingham, Cambridge, and Edinburgh.

Now, a selection of his beautiful paintings is on display at Callaghans - come and see for yourself at the gallery in Shrewsbury!
