Henri-Jean Guillaume Martin, born in Toulouse in 1860, was an esteemed French Impressionist painter. He studied at the respectable École des Beaux-Arts, then earning a scholarship to continue his studies in Paris under Jean Paul Laurens. Later, after winning a scholarship for a work displayed at the Paris Salon, he travelled to Italy and studied the works of classical Italian painters. The light-filled Italian landscapes would inspire Martin’s later works. When he returned to Paris, he developed his well-known Pointillist style, creating vibrant works of small dots and strokes.
Martin’s talent for creating paintings with lively, serene atmospheres has earned him widespread praise and positioned him as one of the leading figures in French art during the late 19th and early 20th century. He is known for his work on the walls of the Salle de l’Assemblée Générale, where the members of the Conseil d’Etat meet. Other significant institutions have displayed his painting, such as the Élysée Palace, Sorbonne, Hôtel de Villie and Palais de Justice de Paris.
