In After Titians, Ghislaine Howard reimagines the grandeur and sensuality of Renaissance painting through a boldly contemporary and expressive language. Inspired by the rich theatricality of Titian’s compositions, Howard dissolves the human figure into sweeping gestures, fractured forms, and vibrant passages of colour, creating a work charged with movement and emotional intensity.
The composition pulses with energy. Figures emerge and recede within a storm of painterly marks, where flesh tones collide with flashes of crimson, blue, and deep shadow. Howard’s vigorous brushwork gives the painting a raw immediacy, while the layered surface recalls the richness and drama associated with Venetian painting. Rather than directly copying Titian, she responds to the emotional atmosphere of his work; transforming classical themes into something instinctive, modern, and deeply personal.
There is a striking tension between chaos and harmony within the composition. The fragmented bodies and dynamic gestures create rhythm across the canvas, inviting the viewer to experience the painting emotionally rather than narratively. After Titians stands as both homage and reinvention, demonstrating Howard’s ability to engage with art history while maintaining her own unmistakably expressive and contemporary voice.
